Cybertecture Academy 2017

The 5th Cybertecture Academy Student Course from 28th July till 6th August is an exciting and inspiration 10 days experiential summer experience for children aged 13-18 interested in architecture, design, technology and innovation. Day 1 An introductory day into the workings of a real architecture design office at James Law Cybertecture. Talks about "What is Architecture?" will let students understand the profession of architects and what they do. An "Intern Sharing" session will invite summer interns in the office to share their experiences studying architectture at universities in Hong Kong and abroad. This is a chance for students to ask questions to seniors a few years ahead on how to apply for university and other tips about how to best prepare for aiming to become an architect. Then there will be project introduction to the project which the Academy will be focused on completing together this year which is a real project for the design of an affordable and sustainable refugee housing for a slum outside Johannesburg, South Africa. Day 2 The Academy will commence teaching the kids on how to be architects by teaching research, planning and brainstorming as teams working together. This will involve each student to present their designs and research in front of the group to practice presentation skills. The day will end with the airing of an iconic movie about architecture called "The Fountainhead" starring Gary Cooper. Day 3 Field trip to the Maggie's Cancer Care Centre at Tuen Mun Hospital designed by world famous architect Frank Gehry. A guided tour by the centre's operators will show the unique design of a harmonious place that brings comfort and peace to cancer sufferers. In the afternoon, there will be an architecture and healing workshop involving the students of the Academy with the centre's users together to explore how architecture can bring healing and well being for people. Day 4 The day starts with a field trip to visit New World Construction's BIM centre, and to learn about how Building Information Modelling is practically used in the construction industry. Students will have the chance to try out the BIM software. In the afternoon, the group will return to the studios of James Law Cybertecture to start their design project for the refugee shelters in South Africa. Day 5 A class will guide students to learn 3d design skills including 3d modeling both with real models and digital software. This will be applied to the students design project. Day 6 Field trip to see the T-Park Power Station in Tuen Mun which Hong Kong's first sludge to energy power station providing clean energy to the city. There will be a tour o the power plant as well as the visitor centre. In the afternoon, the academy will return to the studio of James Law Cybertecture to bring animation and rendering classes for their design projects. Day 7 In conjunction with HKT Education, this will be a full day field trip. First visit will be to the HKT Network Operations Centre to see how HKT manages its network of TV, broadband, telephone services over the entire Hong Kong. This will be an opportunity for students to see how high tech spaces are designed. This will be followed by a tour of the HKT Smart Living Lab, where students can see the development and concept of the latest smart home technologies. The third stop will be to the GIGO Learning Lab where a workshop will be conducted with the students to build different models that combine science and engineering for daily life. This will be a fun hands on experience, and teach students about the important experience of making things. Day 8 Field trip visit to Lan Kwai Fong company's architectural department to understand how an innovative developer is using design and architecture to create fantastic entertainment spaces in China and Hong Kong. In the afternoon, the students will return to James Law Cybertecture to continue their project work. Day 9 Full day team working together on their final project for the refugee housing in Johannesburg, South Aftrica. Day 10 Set up of final exhibition of the design of of their final project for the refugee housing in Johannesburg, South Aftrica. The exhibition will be set up in the atrium of the Innocentre, 72 Tat Chee Avenue, Hong Kong. The opening will be marked by a presentation by all students on their experiences during the academy and the results of their final architectural design together.
